Sloth: A Sinful Secrets Romance Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 2,589 ratings

Dear A. –
I am writing to express my gratitude for your gift. There are no sufficient words, but please accept my sincerest thank you.

Yours,
R.

She writes me back.
I didn’t expect that.

She tells me she’s a lover of chicken pizza and video games, a hot sorority girl with the nickname Sloth. She wants to know something about me in return. She says I owe her.

This is how she saves my life. She doesn’t even know it. We’ve never even seen each other. But I need a reason. Just one reason to continue. She becomes mine.

The anonymity is good. She doesn’t need to know me, but I need her kindness. We both live our lives: a letter here, a post card there. For three years, I escape my demons. And then one day I’m pulled back in.

I’ve resigned myself to what I know is coming. Until the girl I’m seeing shares her nickname: Sloth.

And then the lie I’m living starts to unravel.

--

Sloth is a stand alone novel with many twists, one huge secret, and a non-cliffhanger ending. It will wreck you, but you'll like it.

BTW: Part of the fun of reading this book is trying to guess the secret. I would appreciate it if you could avoid spoilers in reviews and review headlines, so others will be able to enjoy the guessing game.

*Sloth is part of a collection of standalones inspired by a sin and centered around a secret. Also available are Murder and Covet. The fourth sin, Wrath, is coming in summer 2021.

*This book was updated and re-edited in fall 2017, and now includes a bonus story.

How to start this review. Amazing, intense, thoughtful, beautiful, wonderfully written, sad, funny, sexy and soo emotional. This book is a top 5 star read, the first I have read by Ella James and it won't be the last. Every chapter you read you can peel back more and more layers of this incredible story between Kellan and Cleo. They get to know each other way before they actually meet but of course don't realize it. Kellan is the God of sex in this book, the sex scene's are off the scale seriously hot !!! The story and writing is amazing and brilliant and I can't recommend this book enough.

I'm surprised I managed to see the words to read the last part of this amazing book through all the tears and snot, maybe because it hits close to home a little too much, I'm not gonna mention what happens because I don't want to spoil it for anyone, and I know a lot of people say that some books have them gripped from the first sentence, which I find hard to believe because it takes me a couple of chapters but this is the first one to do this to me and I haven't put it down, the characters are amazing along with the 'real letters' outlay and I've enjoyed this one immensely, definitely worth the money, also to the author I hope everyone you know and love are in a healthier and happy place and to those who aren't may they be in a peaceful happy place, God bless. I finally decided to take the plunge on this book, I've had it on my kindle for a couple of years so I wanted to know what made me one click it.

Not going to lie this book had me sceptical for the first 30% or so. The constant letters back and forth with little to go on didn't grab me. That's until I stopped thought about it and decided they must be important later in the story so I reread them with an open minded approach and just absorbed the words.

Turns out I'm glad I did because they were all suttle little clues to the lives of Sloth and R all their hopes and fears disguised amongst the brief notes passed between them over a few years.

I needed to know so bad what the connection was.
As the story progressed I really got to like the characters my heart went out to them, I laughed and cried for parts of this book. I wasn't sure I could proceed at times, that awful feeling of dread was at the back of my mind.
But the need to know pushed me on, kept my curiosity piqued.

The more I read the more I fell in love. What an amazingly terrifying, heart wrenching but beautiful story.
I loved it so much and I'm pleased I read until the end as I'd of missed out on the fantastic journey of two virtual strangers that come to mean more to each other than you could ever imagine.

First things first, I have to say Kellan Walsh makes love like a champion. Like a thoroughbred stallion on acid. And his manly part is the most beautiful one I have ever imagined in my dreams or seen on Tumblr.

The gift, I spent ages thinking what was the gift? How did this unlikely pair become penpals? And yes some of the letters I found a bit difficult to read because of the font size but I got there. The unusualness of them added to the complexity of the tale, because the writer R is unknown.

I loved both Cleapatra and Kellan - see note above. They are both Gold medal winners for great sexual appetite and stamina. Cleo has had a ton of upset in her life and Kellan too but you have to dig to find it.

So many things going on to think about and investigate. I did lots of pondering, then the eureka moment - I shouted out "That is the gift," and woke my husband up. Whoops!

I loved the little nod to M Pierce. Yay, I loved Night Owl, Kellan could have a great dirty talk competition with Matt Sky.

Ok back to the sex, did I say it was smouldering hot? I definitely needed a Lelo break. That said the book isn't all about the sex, it has great plot, great pace and is beautifully written. I love an author who is big on description and Ella gives great prose.

"It's a windy day. The treetops sway slowly. Pine bristles tremble with orchestral restraint. All around their roots, the river spills - an open vein. The rushing water hurts my ears, like someone turned the volume too loud."

"I think I understand. Why all great things are sad. Why silence aches. Why people lose their way. Why when I see a lone figure, I wonder who she's missing and not who'll she'll meet. Why babies die when they're not touched. Why girls cradle letters from strange boys with nameless pain upon their hearts. We're not meant to be alone. We're made with holes inside out souls. The only way to survive is to fill them. I think the catch is, you don't get to choose with what."

Now I need to buy a sloth key ring and a sloth cuddly toy because I feel my life will not be complete without them.

What an amazing book ! I cried like a baby... not a sexy cry... it was big tears, sobs and red nose... I almost throw my kindle away !
Ok so if you’re planning to read slosh you have to know that the first 50/60% of the book are quite slow. Honestly I was asking myself what Ella James wanted to tell me with that story. But THEN everything become clear and the story really start and it’s amazing, breathtaking and so heartbreaking!
Kellan broke my heart and I suffered 1000 death with Cleo.
If you’re hesitating to read that book, please don’t.
You should definitely read it ! Swallow the first half and then just savour the second half !
After this one I definitely need a few days break to cure my heart !

Did you do it? It's ok if you didn't. I managed to put it back in my chest but I don't know if it working right yet.

I have read a few books from this author and this is by far her best book. So much so that I want to change my reviews of her other books.

Firstly I'd like to address the smoking hot sex in this book. Like holy hell!! 🔥🔥🔥 enough said on that!!

This book happens in parts and everything is pretty much your standard romance/erotica novel (except for the dealing lol) till the end of part two. That's where this book takes off. This is where it get mysterious and sad but still not totally unexpected. Part three though, part three had me going "WTF is happening?!? Seriously!" The middle had me going "oh no...😥" and then the end came and that where the author gutted me. She ripped open my chest with that last note. 😭 it was written with so much feeling and love that it wrecked me, and not wrecked like after watching the Miley video but wrecked in the best way possible because I won't be able to read anything else for a while.

Lastly there is the author note at the end. I only ever read them if I really enjoyed the book and I'm so glad I read this one. It was just as heartfelt and moving as the story. I would like to tell the author. Everyone of your struggles was worth it. This book is amazing. I could tell this book came from a place of love and heartache while reading it. I wish nothing but the best for you, your family and R ❤️

All that being said I don't know if this book or ending would have the same impact for every reader because like the quote says "unless you love someone, nothing else makes any sense". I think you have to have truly loved/love someone to understand the choices and decisions these characters make. I get it. I Got it. I loved it. Every minute of it. Thank you

Sloth is an excellent reading adventure that everyone needs to take. Before I continue I want to reiterate the author’s comment. Don’t start this book if you are not in the frame of mind to be crushed emotionally. Trust me you will go down a steep hill right into the pits of despair. That said it is worth the ride if you can handle suspense, romance, angst, tears, and joy.

First let me take a minute to thank Ms. James for not going with her initial idea of releasing this story as a series. I don’t think my heart or my head could handle the wait between each installment.

Now onto my comments about the story. The story is divided into three parts. Part I starts with a quote from Edgar Allen Poe “I was never insane except upon occasions when my heart was touched.” Then continues with a series of letters between “A” (Sloth) and “R”. R initiates the letters with a thank you note for a gift. At this point we don’t know the connection between Sloth and “R” but the letters are important to the story.

Sloth and R send a series of letters, well notes really, back and forth from October 2011 through August 2014. They remain intermittent pen pals while the reader gets to know a little about each other. (As an aside, I read on my phone using the Kindle app. If you aren’t using a Kindle device download the app to your PC or tablet. I had to use a magnifying glass as they are actual hand written notes scanned into the book. The phone app doesn’t have the enlarge capabilities that the actual Kindle has so reading some of the letters is little frustrating.)

After the letters we jump into the life of Cleo Whatley. She is a young college girl from the poor side of the tracks. She is smart, attending a private college on a scholarship, however she doesn’t have any spending money. Cleo needs spending money because she likes to buy designer clothes and the nice things she never had. Most jobs available to her don’t give her the cash she need so, to reach her goals, she becomes a successful marijuana dealer.

Enter Kellan Walsh the student government president. He is an anti-drugs rich kid who makes a point of writing editorials against drug use and illegal sales. He has the ability to make Cleo’s life hell and can get her expelled. Kellan comes up with a proposition for Cleo to continue to earn money and work with him.

Cleo is skeptical but doesn’t see any way out. She needs to stay in school and she needs to help her family at home. As Cleo and Kellan spend more time together they connect with one another. Cleo is falling for her former adversary and she knows they both have secrets that they aren’t sharing.

I fell in love with Cleo from the start. She is the type of woman that I can call my friend. She is strong and doesn’t let her past and misfortune stand in her way. Kellan, on the other hand, I didn’t like at first. He was creepy and entitled but oh does he grow on you.

“You’re almost just like me, Cleo. But you’re the good version. You’re the version people want to take home, and to bed.”

Part II is the coming together of the main characters. Here Sloth unravels their secrets one by one and during the process the reader is held hostage to a wide array of emotions in a way that I can only liken to an emotional kaleidoscope. With each turn of the page my emotions formed a new pattern that settled in my heart, stomach, head or combinations of all these.

“he cuts the lights and turns toward me and grips my face so hard his fingers maybe bruise me and he whispers: “It was always you.”

Part III is the best of the worse of the story. It is emotionally draining to the point that I didn’t think I could make it to the end. At one point I know I cried like a baby for at least fifteen minutes. The journey that this couple travel is amazing and heart wrenching. It is a very realistic look at people who are faced with their life and decisions that we all need to make.

“His hand rubs over my hair as his voice rumbles near my ear. “Not stupid. Tell me why you’re crying.” “It makes me sad that you were lonely.”

The epilogue is perfect. It incorporates all the feels from the entire book and then some into this little chapter. I know what I write here is sketchy and vague but I don’t think it is fair to deny the next reader the discovery of events of Cleo and Kellan on your own.

I thoroughly enjoyed this reading experience regardless of how many times I cried and recovered. Isn’t that exactly what a good writer can do for a reader create a story that puts the reader right in the middle of the action so beautifully and completely that you live with the characters stay with you even for a time after you read The End? Ella James is a great writer and I can still feel this story a week after reading it. And, as soon as I can handle all the ups and downs again I’m going back to the beginning and reading Sloth again.

Every lover of books has that one book that for whatever reason just stays with them long after they turn the final pages and Sloth is that book for me. I was so consumed with this story that I found myself rushing like a sprinter to the finish line only to be so conflicted with so many thoughts and emotions that I promptly re read the entire book from cover to cover again. That was back on 4th July and here we are some 3 months later and this book is one that is still occupying my thoughts on a regular basis. In the end, I actually read it 3 times and know that I will probably read Sloth time and time again for so many reasons which are too layered to fully explain. Finally, yes I cried, at each read and was not ashamed to admit my tears when asked why. Ella James you are one amazing Author and I will forever be thankful to have read Sloth.
